UCSD's Physician Liaison Service

The Physician Liaison Service provides a communication link and referral coordination between UCSD physicians, referring physicians, community and network medical groups, UCSD contracted health plans and other external constituents.

It is designed to help physicians and their office staff access patient services more easily and provide information in the areas of patient care at UCSD Medical Center.

The Physician Liaison will facilitate and expedite the referral process and communicate directly with the patient and physician's office setting up appointments for UCSD specialty physicians, diagnostic testing and admissions.

Referral Process:
  • The physician office calls the Physician Liaison Service with the patient referral, giving pertinent patient information as well as diagnosis and what service is requested; or a referral voucher with patient information can be faxed.
  • The Physician Liaison begins the process of making sure there is authorization for the referral to the specialty service or test (the physician's office is still responsible for requesting authorization for the referral).
  • Once the authorization is verified, the Physician Liaison will begin the process of making the necessary appointment for the specific diagnostic test or specialty physician
  • Once the appointment is made, the Physician Liaison will send a letter to the referring physician confirming the appointment date, time and purpose. A similar letter will be sent to the patient confirming the doctor's name, appointment time and location (a map will be included). The patient usually receives a phone call as well.

Prior to faxing your referral, please obtain a medical record number for your patient.  This will greatly expedite the scheduling process.

1. You or the patient may register by calling (888) 309-8273.
2. Select the option that says, "New Patient Registration."
3. Indicate the patient is new and needs a medical record number.
4. The registrar will collect insurance and demographic information and provide a UCSD Medical Record number.
5. Note the Medical Record Number on the faxed referral request and keep a copy for your records. The Medical Record Number is necessary whenever UCSD is contacted for services.

Please note: When the patient arrives for their first UCSD appointment, they can pick up their blue plastic UCSD ID card at the registration front desk. The card is necessary whenever they check into UCSD.

If you prefer you may fax a copy of the patient’s insurance card(s) with the authorization and medical documentation and Physician Liaison will register the patient for you. Unfortunately, we cannot register patients for whom insurance information has not been faxed.
