Switch in Practice:

3M 1870 TB Respirator Masks are now Single use..... only.

Historically, University of California San Diego Medical Center has carried numerous types and sizes of NIOSH approved N-95 TB Respirators. Starting January 31, 2008, we will carry a one size fits all NIOSH approved N-95 TB respirator: the 1870 respirator by 3M (stock # 716130). We will not be carrying any other N95 respirators.  Although by the end of 2007, all employees will have been fit tested with this new NIOSH approved N-95 TB respirator, annual fit testing remains a requirement .

If you have come from another institution that used a different TB respirator please make sure to go to the TB Control Office in Hillcrest at the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC), multi purpose suite, Mon.-Fri., 8:00am-4:00pm or at Thornton in the Respiratory Care Department, Mon.-Fri., 7:00am-3:00pm to get fitted for the 3M 1870 NIOSH approved TB respirator. This respirator still requires you to be annually fit tested per OSHA regulations.

As for all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE: mask, gown, gloves and face shield) the N95 TB Respirators (3M 1870) are for single use only and have to be disposed of with all other PPE  at the point of care, BEFORE exiting the patient’s room.

Please do NOT reuse TB respirators, carry them on your person, or take into another patient’s room.
