Dear Colleagues,
As we reflect back on Nurses Week, it’s a great time to look back at our accomplishments over the past year. Here are some of the highlights:
- I am excited to report that our RN Fill Rate formerly known as the RN Vacancy rate has continued to increase from 93% to 94%.
- Our Retention Rate is 87%.
- We have held many regional nursing conferences-BONES, Trauma Perinatal just to name a few.
- The Bones Planning Committee was selected as the “Advance for Nurses” 2008 Best Nursing Team. They were recognized for taking teamwork to the highest level through education and empowerment.
- We have nurses that have published and presented at conferences locally, nationally and internationally.
- We are partnering with the Advisory Board in Washington DC over a two year period to provide a leadership development program for our frontline bedside nurses.
- This past spring the Nursing Education, Development and Research Department partnered with staff nurses to implement a new Nurse Residency Program to improve the retention of new graduate nurses and nurse preceptors.
- UCSDMC Leadership and Staff have made the commitment to begin the Magnet Journey. We submitted our application on April 14th.
- Shared Governance Councils continue to demonstrate their commitment to advancing the practice of nursing at UCSD Medical Center.
These are extraordinary achievements. Congratulations to all our nurses and thank you for your commitment to supporting each other in attaining our vision for Clinical Excellence.

Our CNO Margarita Baggett, R.N., M.S.N. is a highly accomplished nursing leader with extensive experience in quality management, service excellence, staff recruitment and retention and regulatory affairs.
Ms. Baggett, a Wharton Fellow from the Nurse Executive Management Program, has a Masters of Science from Adelphi University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Molloy College.
In her role as Chief Nursing Officer, Ms Baggett provides leadership and direction for the nursing staff at both of UCSD's hospitals, and has responsibility for a number of professional and patient care services.
Margarita will address the staff here on the website regarding items she would like to communicate to staff.
