Join a NICU where taking care of babies is a team sport
The UCSD Infant Care Center at our Hillcrest Medical Center, also known as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, is a highly specialized, nationally recognized center of excellence providing the highest level of care available for newborns. We are the only medical center in San Diego to have both a Regional Level III NICU and an L&D service in the same facility, and Southern California’s first Fetal Surgery program. The current 40-bed unit will expand to 50 beds by the fall of 2007. Our new Chief Nursing Officer is a Magnet nursing resource and reviewer, and is preparing to lead us in this exciting journey towards designation. The Forces of Magnetism and the Power of Excellence will work together to create an optimal working environment.
Advanced practice is the benchmark in this unit. We have a dedicated Respiratory Therapy team, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, a Clinical Educator on unit, and a nurse-driven PICC line team.
Scope of Practice
Sixty percent of our deliveries are high risk with nursing staff in attendance as a part of the resuscitation team of respiratory therapists and neonatal providers. Ideal Candidates
California licensed RNs with CPR, NRP, and at least one year of Level III NICU experience are preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish is a definite advantage. Most importantly, you must possess a passion for the work and be ready to take good care of the smallest and sickest babies as well as level II infants.
New Grads
UCSD provides a 4-month orientation for new grads, and a strong Mentorship Program twice a year. This is also available for experienced nurses looking for a career change. In our academic, evidence-based practice environment, we look for demonstrated personal initiative and expect participation in our shared governance model, where bedside nurses are part of the decision making structure in planning the future of the unit and nursing department to meet our Magnet goal.
