Join an ED where you can really make and feel the difference
As the only academic medical center in San Diego, UCSD Medical Center sets the standard for quality care. We have a Level I Trauma designation, a Regional Burn Center, and a JACHO certified Stroke Center.
Are you looking for the “adrenaline rush” that you can only get in emergency nursing? Well, look no more. We offer challenging and rewarding careers for experienced clinical RNs:
-
A diverse patient population with complex conditions requiring sophisticated medical interventions that can only be found in an academic Emergency Department like UCSD’s.
-
A multidisciplinary team environment of physicians, nurses, technicians and administrative partners.
-
Flexible schedules – evenings and nights, 12-, 10- and 8-hour shifts in full-time, part-time and per diem positions to accommodate nurses’ busy family commitments.
UCSD Medical Center – Hillcrest

Our Hillcrest location recently underwent a $1.5 million remodel for our 20-bed Emergency Department and 4-bed Urgent Care. We use "Webcharts,” a completely web-based computerized charting system, with electronic links to lab, radiology, and cardiology services. The Hillcrest site is a Level 1 Trauma Center and the trauma unit is affiliated with the SICU. The ED sees about 37,000 patients a year.
UCSD Medical Center – Thornton, La Jolla
Our La Jolla Location includes an 11-bed Emergency Department with plans for expansion in the next several years. The ED is primarily staffed by faculty and functions as a community hospital, and sees approximately 20,000 patients a year.
Specialty Recognition
Several exciting innovations have recently been incorporated into the care of patients in the ED. One is the Stroke Center certification earned by the Neurology Department in collaboration with the ED. Another is the recently incorporated "STEMI" ST elevation MI protocol that allows medics in the field to initiate a cardiology consultation prior to the patient arriving in the ED and UCSD Medical Centers. This leads to rapid activation of the Cardiac Catheterization Team.
Shared Governance
The Nursing Department has many active committees: Process Improvement, Education, Safety, Disaster, and Patient Satisfaction Committee.
Ideal Candidates
We require a current California RN license, CPR and ACLS certification plus demonstrated nursing clinical skills to identify and implement nursing interventions and evaluate results for Emergency Room patients. Related Emergency Room experience highly desirable. In addition to excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you do your best work in a busy team environment.
