The Moores UCSD Cancer Center—one of 40 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers--includes four main areas of outpatient oncology clinical nursing practice—The Multi-specialty Clinic, The Infusion Center, Radiation Oncology and the Procedure Suite. Each day our experienced and enthusiastic oncology nurses practice excellence in nursing care for patients diagnosed with a wide variety of malignancies, as well as for those with chronic pain or benign hematologic conditions.
Moores Nurses Integral to Interdisciplinary Teams
Based on an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care, Moore Cancer Center nurses are integral in a team approach to care, which also includes physicians, social workers, psychologists, patient and family education specialists and insurance coordinators. In addition to providing the latest standard of care to patients, the Moores Cancer Center is a cutting-edge facility for some of the newest and most promising treatments and technologies in clinical trials. Our Moores Center nurses are key participants in the delivery of care for those patients in clinical trials.
Education, Certification and Practice
Most Moores Cancer Center nurses caring for cancer patients are OCN certified (Oncology Nursing Certified through the Oncology Nursing Society) and Chemotherapy Certified. Opportunities to become certified—and broaden and update clinical expertise—are regularly provided through on-site classes, inservices and support to attend regional and national conferences.
The diverse and expert Moores Cancer Center nursing team has begun its process to establish shared governance to organize its nursing practice. The team’s main committee structure includes Operations, Professional Practice and Quality and Safety. From these teams are emerging several initiatives and projects to further advance nursing care at the Moores Cancer Center. Among the initiatives is a bi-monthly Moores Nursing Journal Club, which provides an environment to look in-depth at recent and relevant clinical oncology nursing research. The Moores Nursing team is also working on trail-blazing projects that will streamline the patient’s care experience when they are treated in various UCSD health care settings--in-patient, out-patient, home care.
Ideal Candidates
To be a Moores Cancer Center nurse, we require a CA RN license, minimum two years clinical oncology experience and knowledge of cancer diagnoses and treatments. Nurses who do well in our environment are team players, with a passion for oncology nursing. They also consistently demonstrate leadership in working with patients and colleagues. They also have an ongoing motivation to be aware of research protocols and new treatment regimens. Nurses seeking to join the Moores Nursing Team have achieved their OCN certification or are committed to sitting for the certification exam within 12-18 months of employment. Candidates who are BSN are preferred.
